Celebrate National Family Health & Fitness Day
Why be active as a family?
If you're looking for a way to get active with your family, the last Saturday in September is National Family Health & Fitness Day! This day was created to promote physical activity and overall health and wellness with the involvement of the entire family. When you are active as a family it increases success mentally, physically, and emotionally all around.
Promoting a healthy lifestyle to your kids can be incredibly beneficial as they grow with how they view a healthy lifestyle, and it can implement healthy habits early on. After all, it can be more difficult to create healthy habits down the road after years of unhealthy habits.
Whether you're already active or looking to get active with your family, this is the perfect day to start and engage in activities that promote a healthy lifestyle.
Although this is something we suggest doing every single day, getting outside with your family first thing in the morning is a great way to start your day. Go for a kid-friendly hike or a simple walk around the neighborhood to set the tone for the rest of the day! Doing this before the fall weather kicks into gear ensures your daily dose of Vitamin D - an essential nutrient for overall health & immunity. To top it off, there are plenty other outdoor activities you can do with your family - play frisbee, kickball, sports, chalk, and so much more!
Create a lesson in the kitchen!
It's no secret that a whole food, well balanced diet plays a huge role in a healthy lifestyle. This is another lesson you want to teach kids as they are young so they are more prone to continue this type of lifestyle as they grow older. There is a clear lack of education when it comes to our food system in schools so it's up to parents to learn themselves and pass that along to kids!
We have a great blog on back to school food prep that embodies a lot of these principals when it comes to getting kids in the kitchen! The best part is that there are a ton of recipes and snacks that are refined sugar free, gluten free if you have a gluten sensitivity or celiac, and free of many common food allergens that play a huge role in inflammation in certain individuals.
Talk about your goals.
A healthy mind is just as important as physical health! Get creative and talk with your kids about their goals for the day, what they want to achieve, and why. For children, this can help productivity throughout the day, increase self-awareness, helps them recognize strengths and weaknesses, and provides a path for success which can help with self-image.
Just remember that National Family Health & Fitness Day isn't supposed to be one single day out of the year. It exists to help encourage this type of lifestyle overall and is an opportunity to get your family working together to create these habits. A healthy balanced life is a happy life!
