Celebrating Earth Day: Eco Friendly Activities for Kids

It’s important to engage in eco friendly activities all year round: But Earth Day is certainly one of the best opportunities to appreciate our environment! And as spring begins and the weather warms up, it’s a great time to get out in nature and celebrate the Earth with the kids. You can take a moment to appreciate nature and Earth’s resources while enjoying the company of your family. Here at LivBar, we think it's always a good idea to stay active alongside family! It’s also good to encourage kids to think of how what we do as humans impacts the planet.

Fun Eco Friendly Activities

This Earth Day, try getting the kids involved to enjoy some eco friendly activities. Start some traditions and get a couple good habits started. Now that spring has sprung, many families are wondering what to do outside and to enjoy the season: Playing outdoors is an easy way to appreciate nature in an eco friendly way. Simply take a stroll around the neighborhood or down the beach to enjoy the outdoors. Bring a blanket and basket of food to turn it into a spring picnic! Wherever you are on the Earth, take this time to do some fun kids activities that don’t negatively impact the environment.

How to Celebrate Earth Day

Earth Day started in 1970 to raise awareness for the environmental movement and appreciate the Earth’s resources. Many people take the opportunity to get involved and take action in protecting and restoring the planet. With the kiddos, it’s an ideal learning opportunity as well as a chance to get out in nature!

First, start by talking to your kids about what Earth Day means and why it’s important to take care of the environment. There are several kid-friendly resources to help them learn about why it’s important to be eco-friendly and what it all means. National Geographic Kids expands on Earth Day in a kid-friendly way here. You can also take a second to explore the website with your child to learn more about whatever else sounds interesting about the world: Animals, history, and science are full of fun facts!

Next, get out and explore nature. A walk, hike, bike ride, or spring picnic are all simple ways to appreciate the outdoors. Fuel up with your favorite LivBars and some fresh fruit for a bright and light Earth Day snack. You could even adventure out onto a body of water (like your local lake) with a non motorized watercraft: Think kayak, canoe, or even paddleboard for some interesting family fun!

Earth Day’s Favorite Kid Friendly Activities

This Earth Day, consider participating in some kid friendly activities to recognize Earth Day. A nature walk is an easy route to take when you and the kids want to celebrate Earth Day with eco friendly activities. Now that it's spring time, playing outdoors is a solid go-to. But you can get even more creative with kid friendly activities for Earth Day!

  • Make crafts with recycled materials and scrap paper: The kids can color their favorite tree, animal, or nature scene like a beach. Try using scrap paper you already have on hand to make a collage.
  • Collect litter at your local park or beach. Though this activity may not get the kids excited at first, it’s a great way to get out in nature while positively and directly impacting the environment.
  • Start a garden. It’s not too late to start a spring garden! Get down and dirty while sowing seeds and transferring produce starts. You can have the kids pick their favorite fruits and vegetables at your local garden center or nursery before getting started. Kids love playing in the dirt!

Whatever you feel like doing to celebrate Earth Day is important to taking care of the planet. And talking with kids about taking care of the environment will help the next generation step in the right direction. Overall, we love the chance to spend time with family while appreciating the Earth. Happy Earth Day!
